The Events of Solitude are perhaps the greatest Media Stunt in the History of Ghyll, certainly in recent history. They have thousand of devout believers, proclaiming that Ghyll ended on the day prophesized, and everything after them is in fact just a mass hallucination. Personally, this scholar believes that everything before them was just an illusion, so he doesn’t really see the diffrence.

Origin
The tale of the Events of Solitude begins, as with many stories, with the Poems of Arariax. Or if you rather, they begin with the thoughts of an idiot, another way a lot of stories about Ghyll begin. Either way, the tale is the same, starting around –171 EC. A scholar by the name Rattallan, a man known far and wide for his complete and total lack of sense, declared that he had combined all of the works of the great poet into one great manuscript, which foretold the end of the World on the Day of Champions of –100 EC. Everything would go silent for three days, after which, the world would stop, the Orthongalities would separate, the dead gods would wake up, and generally be annoyed at the Ghyllians who had been living on them, and just some general mayhem would occur. Now crackpots come out every once and a while, declaring the end of the world, so the Populous of Ghyll at large, ignored him. His prediction was quickly forgotten, and the world moved on. Rattallan himself also moved on, declaring in two months that he had definite proof that Aelfants were going to take over the world in +10 EC. His earlier prediction was forgotten, and the World moved on.

How they re-emerged into public conscience
The prophecy of the foolish scholar lay forgotten until –101 EC. A poor graduate student at Bute University was being forced to catalog all the manuscripts his professor had collected in his travels, and came across the Prediction of the Rattallan, combined with the work that he had done to prove it. The poor student burst out laughing at the proof. Rattallan’s work consisted of picking out a word at random from every poem of Arariax he could find, and several from Artiax, the much less gifted poet who is often confused with Arariax much to his joy. He had assembled these into a complete mish mash of words, out of which he had somehow divined his prophecy. Given that there were several copies of the works (Including one that appeared to have been used as insulation) the student procured a copy for himself, wanting to share it with his friends. He took it to the University Pub with him that, and showed his friends, who proceeded to share a good laugh at the expense of the long dead scholar. They left the copy there as payment for their drinks when they sneaked out, realizing they had no money to pay. It changed hands several times that night, eventually ending up in the pouch of noble of Iganefta, who was riding through. He read it once he got home, wondering how it had gotten there, and immediately panicked. Given that the methods of Rattallan were as inscrutable of those of any other Scholar, he proceeded to give it the respect that he gave to all works of scholars, as the immutable truth (This Particular Nobles name has been forgotten, at his families request, but it doesn’t appear he was to bright, does it?) Panicking, he ran to the Lord, proclaiming his find. Now the lord was rather grumpy at being woken up (It was the middle of the night) and refused to listen. The Noble, not phased one bit, immediately ran to the street corner, where in the general populous of Ghyll, he found a more receptive audience. Word spread quickly, and if not many believed, almost all at least heard. Now Ghyllians had been through this kind of thing before, and many of them were not about to worry until they had some proof. Unfortunately, they got it.

The Events themselves
Three days before the Day of Champions of –101 EC, Ghyll suddenly went silent. Nobody it seemed could hear anything. The only places unaffected were those that rarely, if ever saw visitors, and thus were isolated from Ghyll at large. Of course, these places could not inform Ghyll generally of their auditory status. A few Ghyllians were immune to the effect, but due to the fact that the ones effected couldn’t hear them, it really didn’t matter. Riots Proceeded, mayhem happened, and religious orders found themselves full of applicants. This generally destructive state of affairs continued until about 3 hours before the first celebration of Day of Champions had been scheduled to begin, just as Perky began to set. Suddenly, all of Ghyll could hear again (Well not all. Those that couldn’t hear before still couldn’t hear, but they never really had understood what all the fuss was about anyways. A few others never regained their hearing, but that’s life.) The Populous unanimously shrugged, and went off to enjoy the celebrations. It was perhaps the most attended Day of Champions on record, with plenty of money for all involved with the fesitivities.

What Really Happened
Everything related in the article above is true. However, there are a couple facts missing. First of all, how did word of the eminent destruction of Ghyll permeate the world so quickly and thoroughly? The answer is… Bindlet balls teams. It has been showed that the Bindlet Ball teams, who wished to create a populous more attached to Bindlet Ball, carefully orchestrated all of the happenings then they currently were. By using their fame, and the travel needed for their tasks, they quickly caused all of Ghyll to at least hear about the predictions.

Second, why did everyone lose their hearing? The answer to this question is hotly debated, and no conclusive conclusion has been reached. The only thing everyone seems to sure of is that it is the Bindlet Ball team fault.

Result
Complete and total success. Bindlet Ball became even more popular then it was, and thusly, no one was willing to do anything to the teams, who were needed to play the games. Several other smaller stunts, modeled after the events have been pulled by various organizations, and this whole series of events is the subject of one of my favorite Lectures.

Why Graduate Students shouldn’t steal from their Professors. An excellent moral to be had, don’t you agree?
Dendel’s stripes are a set of 3 bands on a Ghyllian’s Carapace, differing significantly in color from the green that makes up the rest of the carapace. What colors they are depend on where the Ghyllian possessing them was born. Almost every city, from the largest Metropolis, to the smallest village, has it’s own distinctive set. They can instantly mark someone as a stranger, though relying on them for identification is dangerous, leading to mishaps. 30 members of the ill-fated Kortayal Trading Expedition stumbled into Iganefta, and were all slaughtered because one of their members had was sworn to have Dendel’s stripes exactly like those of the dwellers of the Evesque Valley. It turns out that the man had mistaken one stripe of white for a stripe of blonde. The apologies Iganafta offered were not very well received by the company, which summarily collapsed before it could send off a nasty letter in response.
Each one of these must be recognized exactly for adequate interpretation of the Stripes. Very few experts in Dendel's Stripe intrepretation exist, and most of them work at Bute University, teaching a student their knowledge, and playing guessing games at the local tavern.

Myth’s
The most prominent myth surrounding the Stripe’s is that the larger and more brilliant the stripes, the more physically fit the Ghyllian possessing them. There is no evidence to support this, but the belief remains prominent, and those who’s Stripe’s are less then Brilliant often enhance their coloration with dyes.

Many cultures also proclaim that whatever god theys they believe created them, marked them with the perfect colors to show their status above all others. Others were marked diffrently to allow discrimination. Sensible people ignore these claims, but a few zealots hold them near and dear to their hearts, often declaring war on anyone without their kind of stripes. They normally forget about it quickly enough, and a battle has never been fought because someone proclaimed their Dendel's stripes marked them as better then anyone else, and impressive accomplishment, considering Ghyll's history.

Oddities
The inhabitants of the area around Lake Crimin appear to have no Dendel stripes, a characteristic which they share with many unscrupulous members of Ghyllian Society, who paint themselves such in order to avoid recognition. It is theorized that in actuality, all 3 Bands just happen to be green, but it isn’t certain. If so, it would be the only example of three stripes of the same color.

They normally forget about it quickly enough, and a battle has never been fought becuase someone proclaimed their Dendel's stripes marked them as better then anyone else, and impressive accomplishment, considering Ghyll's history.

Boxing day is quite possibly the most important Ghyllian holiday, at least in some cultures, and is certainly one of the most wide spread. It traditionally falls on 7/23, and the clean up after it traditionally continues for the next 2 weeks.

Origins
It’s roots lie in the day the Exis of Whunn marched his grand and glorious army to Bute, only to find the gates closed, an unforeseen, and as argued by many great thinkers of his day, unforeseeable event. The Army, completely at a loss of what to do, proceeded to sit down outside the gates and wait for them to open. The inhabitants of Bute, quite a savvy bunch, ignored the Exis of Whunn’s promise to “Not hurt them to badly,” and held the gates closed. For the rest of the day, the army sat outside the gates, waiting for them to open. The ordinary soldiers, bored, and finding their expectations of slaughter frustrated, did what anyone sensible at that point would do. They got raging drunk. The only casualty of the entire siege, which was to last 6 months, was Azer Wallabin, one of the greatest Musicians of the age, who, when hearing the inevitable singing of the drunken Soldiers, was placed in such an excruciating position that he chose to jump from the walls of Bute. And, in the course of being drunk, a number of soldiers chose to go around dumping out their possessions on the ground, along with anyone else’s they could get their hands on. No one knows what prompted the drunks to do so, but an investigation by the Brothers of the Lantern, uncovered by one of the reporters of the True Tales of the World, indicate divine intervention. Despite the questionable nature of the source, this has entered popular belief. However, no matter how it was inspired, that was how a great holiday entered existence.

Now some may ask, how did all of this lead to a holiday, and unfortunately, this has been lost to the mists of time. What knowledge we have suggests that interested parties, namely breweries and wineries, had a great amount of influence in advancing the holiday to it’s current position.

Procedures for Celebrating
Boxing day is celebrated different ways in different places, though there are a few things the always remain constant. One is that half of Celebrants must have imbibed some alcohol, the amount ranging from a Cup of Ale in Stindersgrough, to an entire keg in the immediete vicinity of the Cadaver. This tends to make the whole proceeding make more sense, so at least half of the population knows what is doing, and there is no prohibition against more seeking the enlightenment given by the Cup.

The Second is that everyone get at least 3 Possessions, of some value, though not to much. Fragile items, and consumables are discouraged, for reasons that will be revealed shortly. Where the number comes from is a subject of debate by many scholars. Now depending on the size of the gathering, which ranges from single families to whole towns, the procedure changes. With smaller groups, usually consisting of one or two families at most, everyone just dumps their things in a pile, and then turns around and walks away. With large ones, a box is used to designate the dumping zone, which is then shook vigorously in order to ensure an even distrubution of items. What is important that a large circle is drawn around where ever the items are placed, and all participants take positions on that circle. A ref, usually someone who has chosen not to participate due to his desire to watch the proceedings, will give a signal, varying from location to location, and all of the participants will race toward the pile as fast as they can go. They are then allowed to pick two items and walk with them from the pile. Fighting over items is allowed, and even encouraged in some locations. After everyone has taken their two items, the remaining whole items are donated to whatever charities will take them. Cheating is very deeply frowned upon, though punishments vary. Taking your own items back is also frowned upon, as the entire point is supposedly to represent the idea that giving to the society and getting something entirely different back, and quite possibly holding no value to you or anyone you know, is perfectly alright.

A rather strange tradition that has sprung up in many areas is that certain items must always be in the pile, changing hands in the community. It is regarded as terribly luck for the entire community if the items are not placed in the pile, so they tend to always make a showing, whether the owners are willing to give them up or not. They range from small rings, some valuable, some not, to full sets of Freege Horns, a claim on these merely made by holding on to them.

An informal bartering session, where people trade items that they accidentally got, or were forced to take, for things they consider better are also traditional. The Ref presides over the bartering session, though most of the time, he delegates the job to the first person he sees, and goes about wandering the Session, looking for things he wants. He is also in charge of carting all the unclaimed items to Charity, and it isn't unheard of for the Ref to donate anything he see's that he likes to the charity of himself. It is generally viewed that this is the Referee's fee not being able to participate in the festivities, and thus particuraly canny members of the community are known to hold the office of referee for years at a time. Also, a referee's name is often mentioned as a candidate for any political offices that open up after a good boxing day.

Holiday’s Name
The source of the name of holiday is conufsing, as different texts have it coming from different places. The one thought of as true by most Ghyllians is that it simply refers to the large box used in the celebration in some locations. A close second is the idea that the name comes from the fighting that occurs of the more treasured items. A popular theory among writers at True Tales of the World, Aliens Everywhere, and various other rags, is that it is a veiled refrence to the Avazian Box, though exactly how this holiday could be related to that dark technology is unknown.

Extent of the Holiday
The holiday is celebrated in almost every part of Ghyll our scholars had reached, in some form or another. The Dualian Empire outlawed the Holiday accidentally at one point, and news of the Rebellions reverbrated throughout the known world. According to M'Kev D'wal it is even celebrated on Kebro-shepenor by the Kev, though in an entirely diffrent fashion, under an entirely different name, on an entirely diffrent day. That it is celebrated by these isolationist savages makes it clear that this holiday transcends culture, and by some is held to be a gift of the creator. These people also believe that the writers of Aliens Everywhere are his prophets

Kalen Firth: /* The 'Daver */

Arbuckle Hill is the home of The Cadaver, the notorious public house. In ages past it was the site of Arbuckle Abby, and Reliqary of the Creator. Prior to that it was believed to be the center of creation itself. The colorful history of Arbuckle Hill is part of what defines the unique character of Folktown.

The Early Days
When the Creator wiped Ghyll from its finger there was a small place where the land was lifted as it adhered to the receding digit. When a town formed at this natural vantage point for surveying the surrounding countryside it was named Folktown. This hill was named Folktown Hill (the early Ghyllians weren't very creative).

The first record of any name similar to Arbuckle as applied to the Hill was in an ancient map manuscript (tentatively dated circa -700 EC) that shows Folktown surrounding an Arbugghyll Manor positioned roughly where Arbuckle Hill would be. Nothing is known of this Arbugghyll person other than judging from the size of the dwelling they were both prominent and prosperous.

Moral Upheaval
In -266 EC Odgar IV was elected to be the Rejah and promptly changed everything he felt needed changing. This included the role of Arbuckle Hill. Over the years, Arbugghyll manor had evolved into Arbuckle Abby and Reliquary. In its hallowed halls priceless artifacts and recipes of the holy prophets of the Creator were stored (along with many parts of the prophets and their Ancestral burial tableaus).

The Order of the Sisters of Universal Civic Kindness and Sympathy (SUCKS) had taken a vow to eliminate the vices of drinking, stimulants, tittilating scripts, smut, dancing and generally fun of any kind. They had considered trying to eliminate procreation, but that proved too difficult a prospect, but nearly everything else was proscribed. Life, as they lived it, was to be spent in constant marvel of the Creator and the minimum possible effort to maintain existence. It was a very small order.

Odgar IV heard of this order and made plans to incorporate their philosophies into his post as moral regulator. Wisely, he did this through agents and not directly. The barkeeps and restaurateurs of Folktown staged an uprising in -250 and burned the Abby to the ground, beat the Sisters of SUCKS and forced them to flee. One of the sisters, who tried to save the Reliquary and its priceless contents, had her body broken and was left to die on the Hill.

Odgar relaxed his standards for moral order after the incident, reasoning, "If they are going to be that passionate about it, why not let them ruin their lives?" (Songs of Odgar The Fourth - 'A-Mirthin' We Shall Go'). He did, however, canonize the sister on the Hill as the Martyr Ursula Sandwich of the Hill, even though that wasn't her name.

The Sign on the Hill
The first restaurant to stand on Arbuckle Hill had no name. They erected the infamous sign of the Arbuckle Hill Martyr on opening day in -248 EC as a warning to any high-pants government or religious official who would seek to shut them down. As a result they were burned out of business in less than three years.

A succession of bars, restaurants and speakeasies followed, each succumbing to fire. For over 150 years the cycle continued. Each time, the only remaining landmark of prior establishments was the sign. In the year -88 EC the Cranee Historical Society declared the sign a historical landmark. Since that time, the sign has only been changed once. In -22 EC the original sign was sent to the archives at the Odlucian Library and a replica was put in its place.

The 'Daver
In -188 EC the building known as The Cadaver was built. It was originally a show-hall, bar, restaurant and vlorm den until it burned in -178 EC. By that time, the combined income of all of those ventures was significant enough that it was simply re-built and business continued.

Over the intervening years the building has been replaced no less than six times. It has been damaged by fire, explosion, spontaneous Ghyllian combustion, riot, lightning, bindlet balls and barfights. All told, the 'Daver probably has more battle damage than the Plain of Brahang.

Common superstition owes the 'Daver's longevity to the sign. Of all of the businesses that have stood on Arbuckle Hill, the 'Daver was the only one to affix the sign to its building. It is speculated that if the sign had survived all those years, then any building attached to it should survive as well. History shall determine if the theory holds true.

I was torn about including more about the Martyr of Arbuckle Hill. There is a passionate speech by Odgar IV on the occasion of the Martyrdom of Ursula Sandwich of the Hill which I'd like to quote here. It isn't part of this entry but I found it so moving I couldn't ignore it, even though it was later excised from the entry. I felt that in the notes was appropriate for this material:

From the Speech on Baros 14, -250 EC by Odgar IV

Fellow Ghyllians, I invite you today to remember this woman who gave her life in the preservation of tradition. When you find the hidden treasure under your nest that you thought you had lost, remember this woman. When you discover the lost utensil that has fallen in the back of a cabinet, remember this woman. When you discover your grandmother has some fondly recalled trinket in her attic, remember this woman. This woman was killed for trying to preserve history, morals, and life.

Her body, broken, bashed, beaten and mutilated until the remains couldn't be rescued or identified has been lost. The treasures she defended - priceless relics of forgotten prophets who will forever remain lost and forgotten - are reduced to ash. I can only hope that the decadent heathens who would stoop to such act are forever punished for their hubris at deciding her fate.

I thereby declare that this nameless Sister of Universal Civic Kindness and Sympathy is now to be remembered as Martyr Ursula Sandwich of the Hill. Forever let it be known that the Sister of SUCKS has been beaten into MUSH.

Anyone not moved by that is dead inside. --Dr. H. L. Ackroyd 13:37, 19 May 2005 (EDT)

A true scholar would have noted that the "Early Days" are mere mythology as the so-called Creator has no proof of existance and only Ghyllian word of mouth supports this "historical" recollection. Ghyllian scholars should refrain from imparting religious bias into their scholary texts. --Lisa B. Underhalh 14:13, 19 May 2005 (EDT)

I leave the truth of such statements to be determined by the individual. I mearly relayed the legend as it is spoken with revernt tones. Should you find a theoarcheologist who refutes it and cite his work, then I'll be more inclined to accept the legend as mythology and not fact. --Dr. H. L. Ackroyd 19:52, 19 May 2005 (EDT)

I side with the esteemed Dr. Ackroyd on this one. The Scholars must be free to include the religous aspect when unavoidable. As all the inhabitants of Folktown believe in this, it is impossible for complete dialog on the subject without the inclusion. All Religous facts must be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, any Theoarcheologist who disagreed with the legend would be laughed out of the room.--Kalen Firth 22:29, 19 May 2005 (EDT)

A scholar who prides himself on his unenthralling speech, he is disappointed if he can make it through a lecture without everyone going to sleep. It is considered bad manners to forget to bring a Pillow to one of his lectures. Some of his fellow Scholars have been known to run in fear if he starts heading up toward the front of an Auditorium. Mr. Firth, the only title he will accept, accepts all this with good humor. It is well known that he writes terrible Novels under false names which subsequently sell very well. Suspiciously, many have turned up in the dumpsters of Bute University. Coincidentally, it is believed that the better a book sells, the less time he spends speaking. He submits articles to the Encyclopedia most as something to fill the hours that he spends not speaking, and not making his books any better.
Can I cite more than I'm required to cite? (cf. Rule 2)
Each turn after the first, you're required to cite two phantom entries (which may be existing phantoms, brand new phantoms, or a mixture of both) and one existing entry. For Round 2, you may not cite two brand new phantoms. None of these three citations can be terms you've created or written. However, if you've properly met these requirements, your entry can certainly refer to other terms in the Ghyll encyclopedia, including those you've personally written. These "other terms", however, MUST have been previously defined or created. See the Ghyll Index and the Ghyll Phantom Index, which jointly constitute a complete list of in-play terms. Direct quote from the FAQ.
The Arandellion Moors are a series of High Lands to the north of the Jorvyll. They seem to be fairly useless, and despite their large size, only a few groups of hardy Ghyllians seem to live among them. This might be due to the face that the land, for the most part, smells of Rotting Fefferberries.

The most common plant in the moors is the wide spread Fefferberry. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of this land, the most common species on the Moors is one of the least economically viable. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of the area have taken to brewing an alcoholic beverage out of them, useful only because it blots out the smell of the Rotting Berries. The Inhabitants consider going blind an excellent trade for getting rid of the awful smell, and almost never go outside their homes without taking a good stiff drink of the brew.

The most common activity in the area is the brewing of said beverage. One’s status in the area is based upon how much of the stuff one can imbibe, and a good drinking contest has been known to knock out entire villages. As far as diet goes, it is mostly Fefferberries, Mute Chukarandos, Zhur Fruit when in season, and for the exceptionally hungry, the mash of the Darseed Plant.

As far as historical importance goes, there has been very little. The Moors have become the home of numerous exiles, due to the accepting nature of the locals, who are happy enough to see anyone new. However, anyone who settles in the Moors soon disappears from the public eye, seeing as their time becomes consumed by the culture of the area, and that very little of intrest occurs when the smell of Rotten Fefferberries fills the air. The most notable effect they have had on current history is the rather strange story of the Pobellian Debates, which were supposedly over the ownership of them. According to popular myth, they were ruled by the Alezeans long ago, which accounts for how disgusting they are now, but there is no evidence whatsoever for this, as the lands their ruins can be found are to the far south, but this scholar can provide no definite proof to the contrary, and thus feels the rumor deserves inclusion.

Apologies if I misunderstood you or something, but I don't believe you are correct. I am new, so if I messed up somewhere, feel free to denounce me. --Kalen Firth 18:14, 18 May 2005 (EDT)

:In this case, the FAQ is talking about inline citations. The Citations footer at the bottom of the entry is "special" and should list ONLY the two phantom citations, and ONE existing citation (typically, the one you feel is "best" related to your entire entry itself). See any of the entries from the first Round for an example. --Morbus Iff 21:07, 18 May 2005 (EDT)

My apologies. I will replace those that I feel are less fit with simply inline Citations.

However, anyone who settles in the Moors soon dissapears from the public eye, seeing as their time becomes consumed by the culture of the area, and that very little of intrest occurs when the smell of Rotten Fefferberries fills the air.

Threel is a pretentious place located on the shores of scenic Segundus. Built as a border baracade by some early paranoids, it has been long converted to a spa and vacation spot once the inhabitants realized that there was nothing to defend the border from. The walled palisades however make excellent spots from which to fish in the calm blue waters or to play Hoopkah on sunny afternoons.

Threel is also noted for its peaceful demeanor and somewhat sanguine attitude about everything. This is likely due to the fact that almost every aspect of life in Threel is catered, served, provided for a modest fee, or built into the package. The town has been the official retirement community for the Hive-Lords and Paramount Queens for as long as the town has been established. Therefore, every occupant of the seaside resort is treated as if they were a former Lord or Queen.

This has been a largely beneficial arrangement for both the workers of Threel and the occupants except for a short, but remarkable period during the Extraordinarily Bloodless Revolution. It has been suggested that hostility arose out of an inequity between these two classes. It seems that until the Palace of Lost Souls was - forcibly - opened to the public in -249 EC, there was no place for the Threel working community to receive the same treatment as the upper-classed retirees.

In fact, according to the account by Grumantopuginius, the Extraordinarily Bloodless Revolution was a remarkably civilized affair with the lower-class combatants apologising profusely to the upper class ones, and the upper class defenders promising that they were sympathetic and that the conflict would in no way affect the medical or retirement benefits of any of the rebels. It is also noted that the famed fresco by Alarius was completely unharmed despite the death of no less than three retired art critics who stopped to struggle with its complex harmonies in the midst of battle.

These days, Threel sits as a gilded egalitarian paradise where all of the splendors once reserved for the ruling classes are now available to anyone with a mind to try them as long as they don't plan to stay long and can afford the quezloos.
