The [[Order of Truth]] is a society which has existed for centuries. However, its operations have always been veiled in deep secrecy, its workings known only to its inner members. The Order has kept this secrecy mostly through segregation of its members: only the Supreme Ruler ever publicizes his or her membership in the order, leaving most organization to occur in geographically and numerically limited "cells". These Supreme rulers maintain the position from the time they are elected, via a secret process, until their death.

Due to the heavy secrecy surrounding the Order, most information is collected from the stories of lore, both from Ancient and Recent history. One story line which has been maintained over the years is that the Order is the host of a powerful tool, known only as the [[Pagvahhz Transgenan]] device. Very little is known about this tool, however: most texts say that it is "a mysterious
and powerful device whose mystery is exceeded only by its power". This device is thought to be the only remaining artifact of the race that inhabited the lands of [[Alezan]].

From the public actions of the Order, it is clear that there is a relatively large number of members. The wishes of the Supreme Ruler are seldom passed onto the general public, but when they are, such wishes are usually met. An edict from the Supreme Ruler has never been ignored by the populace of Ghyll: lawmakers and breakers both fear retribution were they to act contrary to the Order. In one case, a public figure did publicly decry an edict of the Supreme Master, building quite a revolution around him. However, shortly after the largest anti-Order demonstration in history, the [[Night of Cloaks and Daggers]] fell. The public figure, a local librarian at the [[Charterhouse Collection]] was so completely destroyed that he, along with his entire movement, were erased from history.

The Night of Cloak and Daggers is the only event in recent history which has been attributed to the Order, destroying those who opposed them with no trace as to the reason or source behind it. For a time, the [[Events of Solitude]] were thought to be a destruction of a contra-Order uprising. However, 2 years ago, it was proven that the [[Events of Solitude]] were actually just a media concotion, to bring more tourist activity to the [[Day of Champions]].

Lane Smallwood was born to the same family as [[Iain Underholm Smallwood]], a younger sister to him by two years, born in -73 [[EC]]. The exact date of her birth was lost due to a clerical error in the [[Office of Knowledge About Things]]. It seems that the Office regularly removed all information about persons 20 days after their death to prevent persons from looking through the lives of others looking for sordid details. However, a calculation error in a [[Geolan Calculating Machine]] led to the removal of the records 20 days after her birth, rather than 20 days after her death. This error was not discovered for many years, however, until after no accurate records could be recreated.

She studied under her parents, Roger and Alice Bob, hoping to follow in their footsteps as an active member of the [[Endlessly Rising Staircase Movement]]. However, upon her mother's death, she retreated from the world to a place that she now refers to only as [[Gyll Hill]] for a period of 6 years. Estranged from her brother, then the Baron of Smallwood, and friends by her long time in hiding, she came back to the world with a new goal in mind: to destroy the [[Endlessly Rising Staircase Movement]]. She fought against them for many years, using guerilla techniques to encourage the lessening of their members in any way posssible. She did this, rather successfully, for a number of years, fighting against the cause that her parents, in the past, had fought for.

However, Lane's woes were not ended with the loss of her mother and father, to death and reclusivness, respectively. When her older brother, who had been a mentor to her as a child, was killed in -7 [[EC]], she entered a period of mourning, where she would speak to no one. Thus far, she has maintained that silence to this day. She now lives in solitude at a guest house behind [[Chez Smallwood]]; she is seldom seen, and never heard. It seems that she will never come out of this mourning period, or perhaps only would if the killer of her brother was found. In any case, the line of Smallwoods from Roger and Alice Bob will most likely never be continued.

The Calends Galas, as the name implies, are galas surrounding key calendrical events, and traditionally occur twice a year. In previous years, when the country was primarily agrarian, the galas happened at the end of the harvest, and at the end of the planting. Now that the country is more industrialized, the final Varhookan of Ikk and the final Varhookan of Conti have been agreed upon for these events.

On the day of the gala, everything else stops. All businesses have the day off, Government offices and banks are all closed, and schools have the day off. While it is not, technically, an "official" holiday, it is understood that no work is going to get done anyway. Every major city has their own Gala, but these tend to be poorly attended, with most people travelling to Folktown for the big Gala there.
The most important source of information about the Calends Galas is the book '''Gala Rules and Traditions''', which is now in its 4th edition. The book has been collated from a variety of ancient documents, newspaper articles, and interviews conducted during Galas. It also contains a selection of winning stories from previous years' contests.

===Harvest Calends Gala===
Held on the last Varhookan of Ikk, and ostensibly celebrates the completion of the harvest. Since harvest moves from year to year, depending on the weather, it is placed late enough so that harvest is almost guaranteed to be over.

''Historical note: In -16 [[EC]], the [[Fefferberry]] crop was almost entirely lost due to the Gala coinciding with the extremely late ripening of the berries, and the unusually large influx of birds passing through on their annual migration. The small crop resulted in the fefferberry wine of that vintage being highly sought-after, and very costly.''

The Harvest Calends Gala is mostly an agricultural event, with contests for the best produce, best livestock, and many competitions of strength and craft making. The [[graphorn]] wrestling contest is always a popular favorite.

<blockquote>''The [[graphorn]] shall be greased, and shall be released into the ring. The contestant must hold the creature upon the ground for so long as it takes the contestant's partner to drink his flaggon of wine. In the event that it escapes during this period, the flaggon must be refilled. The contest is over when the graphorn has been so pinned, or the contestant's partner has become insensate. (Gala Rules and Traditions, 4th Edition, -23 [[EC]])''</blockquote>

Of great importance is the [[darseed]] judging. Although conducted in the greatest apparent levity, the contest is very serious, since it determines the cost of [[darseed]] for the coming year, which in turn can determine how much [[darseed]] farmers can afford to plant for the next season. The contrasts of this event are captured best in the famous painting of the [[darseed]] farmer, dressed in his brightly colored clothes, complete with the four-tassled hat and false nose, sitting morosely on his bales of produce, to which is attached a yellow note proclaiming a score of 3, shedding bitter tears into his brightly gloved hands. (The artist responsible for this painting is not known. The painting is currently in the Fine Art Museum in Folktown, under extended loan from the anonymous owner of the work.)

===Planting Calends Gala===
Held the last Varhookan of Conti, celebrating the end of the work of planting. The actual end of planting varies greatly between crops, regions, and years, but there has not been a conflict in recent memory, as everyone tries to get the work done before the Gala. However, in more than one year, a crop has been unsuccessful by virtue of being planted before the ground was quite thawed.

The Planting Calends Gala is a quieter event, focused more on artistic and literary endeavors, but also with contests involving cooking: cake-making contests, pie-eating contests, and wine and beer contests. In some outlying regions, it is regularly reported that [[Pyxie]]s arrive in time for the [[Fefferberry]] wine contest, although it has been many years since they have been seen in Folktown.

===Storytelling===
But the highlight of both galas comes just after sunset, when everyone gathers in the great central tent for the story-telling contest. From sundown to the early hours of the next morning, stories are told, with prizes being given in a variety of categories, including funniest, shortest, and scariest. The overall winner of the story contest is crowned the Author Laureat for the six months until the next gala.

<blockquote>''The Author Laureat shall be chosen by popular acclaim, and shall tell his story again as the sun rises on the new day. The story shall be transcribed by a designated person, and shall be distributed to school children around Ghyll. The new Author Laureat may live in the Laureat House in Folktown for the following six-month, until the next Gala, if this is desired. (Gala Rules and Traditions, 4th Edition, -23 [[EC]])''</blockquote>

[[Arariax]] was the Author Laureat for 9 years running, from the Planting Gala in -260 to the Harvest Gala in -251 {{EC}}, and many think that he was driven to his self-imposed exile due to the negative effect that this was having on the contests: nobody else thought they would ever have a chance to win, so the quality of storytelling was falling considerably. Most of the well-known authors of the last 200 years have either won the Calends Gala story contest, or at least done very well in it.

These contests are also very important in the historical record of the nation, since for centuries it was at these events that the histories were told, and thus passed on to the younger generations. Unfortunately, with the advent of readily available printed books, this tradition has started to die out, and many of the old stories have all but passed from memory. Both the [[Cranee Historical Society]] and the [[Bureau of Forgotten Knowledge]] are watching this trend with great interest, if with somewhat differing goals in mind. And, indeed, there is a promising upsurge of interest in the old stories of late, with last year's Author Laureat being awarded to Mork Wasterson, a 87-year-old man, for the telling of his experiences on the day of the [[Earthquake of Fluyr]].

<blockquote>''As he told the tale, it was as though we were there with him, and he was again just 13, running home from the [[Baleman]] as the trembling earth tried to toss him to the ground. ([[Folktown Records]], special Gala report)''</blockquote>

Stories told during the Gala are immediately consigned to the public domain, promoting their widespread retelling. It is not uncommon for the same story to be told year after year, but with embellishments and regional flavor added. In fact, many stories are almost considered to be a necessary part of the traditional competition, and it is thought to be a bad omen for some of them to be missing. The story of the origins of the [[Aelfants]] is one such story, leading to the widespread misconception, held by the unfortunates who have never seen one, that [[Aelfants]] are mythical.
Great write-up Doc. You do me proud, remindin' folks of my story "The Epic of the [[Aelfants]]." I would have won Author Laureat the first year I told it too, if it weren't for old You Know Who, whose name I still don't mention. But I aint bitter. Long as the "Epic" keeps gettin' told, I'm happy. Like I said, great write-up Doc. Keep up the good work. --[[User:Qwentyth Pyre|Qwentyth Pyre]] 18:48, 21 Sep 2004 (EDT)

To nurture the creation of a Ghyll Encyclopedia that will be of use to all of Ghyll's citizens, the Encyclopedants--key editors, and instigators of the encyclopaedic effort--are taking certain measures to ensure that some regional variations are ''normalised'' to canonical systems. One of the regional variations that the Encyclopedants have felt it foremost necessary to address is that of dates and times.

What this means to scholars is that when you submit entries that contain dates and times in a regional system, you will be asked (if we can get a message back to you) to provide them instead in the Encylopedant Calendar. It is the aim of this notice to define that calendar, and provide you with tips on the conversion. Should it be impossible for you to be contacted, the Encyclopedants will take up the changes themselves, attempting to provide normalisations where possible, and omitting dates otherwise.

==The Encyclopedant Calendar==

<div style="background-color:#eee;border:1px solid #ccc;float:right;margin:1em;padding:0.5em;width:275px;"><strong>EC Linking Shortcut</strong>: When using EC dates in your entries, always use the special <nowiki>{{EC}}</nowiki> syntax to link back to this page. For example, typing "<nowiki>-20 {{EC}}</nowiki>'" will produce the proper text, as well as an automatic link back to this explanation and timeline (below).</div>

The Encyclopedant Calendar (EC) is based on years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. There are sixty seconds to a minute, sixty minutes to an hour, twenty-four hours to a day, seven days to a week, four weeks to a month, and a dozen months to a year. Hence there are three hundred and thirty six days in a year, as corresponds with a full rotation of our seasons.

The epoch for the Encyclopedant Calendar, i.e. 0 EC, is based on the date that the call for entries was first set forth over the fair lands of Ghyll. Hence, the first year of the creation of the Ghyll Encyclopedia will take place throughout 0 EC. Since scholars will generally be mentioning dates only when they have occured before the creation of the dictionary, it is expected that dates prior to 0 EC will be most heavily represented in entries: the syntax for doing so is to use a negative number for the amount of years. Note that -1 EC is the year before the creation of the Ghyll Encyclopaedia. It is expected that the first round of definitions for the twenty six letters of the alphabet will take one EC year to complete, and hence the next time we call for definitions of words beginning with "A" is predicted to occur at the start of 1 EC.

To identify a Ghyll month, use the year followed by a slash followed by the number of the month. Likewise, for a day, use the year followed by a slash followed by the number of the month followed by another slash followed by the day. ''Example: the fifth day of the seventh month of -20 EC would be written as -20/7/5 EC.'' For the names of individual months and days, consult the [[Bursine Calendar]] (on which the EC is based).

==Ghyll Timeline==

In order to aid scholars' abilities to convert their regional dates into EC, the Encyclopedants have taken it upon themselves to research the dates for the events described in the first set of entires received for the letter "A". It has been a painstaking and laborious process, but it should enable scholars to more easily research the EC date for events that they describe. The timeline is as follows:

<table class="ghyllidx" style="padding-left:1em;">
Just replace the number in the URI (the Web address) with the one that you want the EC date of.</div>

From the first set of entries received for the Encyclopaedia, it is clear that many dates are stated indirectly using Folktown Records edition numbers. Since the Folktown Records has only been running since -13 EC, this only works for recent events, but those are the events most relevant to the inhabitants of Ghyll today, and the Folktown Records are common and popular enough that we can expect more excerpts from them in entries to come. As the editions of Folktown Records have been produced without fail every week from -13/3/22, we can provide the following dates for landmark issues:

Baleman was the primary theatrical location for the [[Amphitheatre aristocracy]] until approximately -75 {{EC}}. A decorative amphitheatre befitting to the Aristocracy, it was a place where the aristocracy could practice theatrics in front of large audiences. Carved into the side of a large hill, the seating was entirely of carved stone, with historical scenes engraved below the seats. Said to have taken a period of time equivilant to 50 years in the {{EC}} timeline, it was rumored to be one of the most impressive structures created by the current inhabitants of Ghyll.

Diagrams of Baleman indicate that it could have seated upwards of 25,000 audience members. The single largest ampitheatre in record as being used for theatrical performances, it was most likely here that many of the stories of [[Fijjit Mejora]] were first told. A round staging area was backed by a thick stone backdrop. The stone backwall had several small cutouts, as well as a series of blocks behind which characters in theatrical performances could stand to aid in the creation of illusion in the performances.

Baleman was located at the northern edge of the [[Evesque Valley]], in a relatively unpopulated area. The lack of artificial light in the area made it a useful tool for teaching interested Ghyll citizens about the night sky. Historical records indicate that at one time, these stargazing tours were at one time a common occurance, but as Ghyll citizens became less interested in the night sky, they fell off. The last record of such a session is listed as being in -90 {{EC}}, during which 4 students visited Baleman to learn about the sky.

Baleman was destroyed in -75 {{EC}} in the [[Earthquake of Fluyr]]. A previously stable fault line suffered a major shift, causing the majority of the seating to collapse. The thick white stone seats were designed to support heavy weights vertically, but could not support lateral cracks caused by the rift, and the theatrical location fell into ruin. It still exists today, however, it exists as a tourist attraction only.
'''The Encyclopedants''' is a term applied to the small group of individuals who decided a collection of Ghyll intellect, in written and distributed form, was necessary for the bettering of society, as well as the benefit of future historians. The group now presides over the encyclopedia's integrity and "cohesion of vision". To remain an objective judge, the Encyclopedants attempt to focus only on "the facts as we're told them", asking questions, poking holes, and suggesting "standards" to further quality assurance. These Progress Reports are considered official communication between the Encyclopedants and their Scholars, and they encourage others to write their own thoughts and comments into the margins.
* Baleman could seat upwards of 25,000 people
* It was used as a location to teach Ghyll inhabitants about the night sky until -90 {{EC}}
* It is commonly thought of as one of the most impressive structures created by the current inhabitants of Ghyll

===[[Ball Lightning Liqueur]] (Invention)===
* Ball Lightning Liqueur is a counterpart to another weapon, "Awal Sleeps".
* "Awal Sleeps" comes from the [[Evesque Valley]]; Ball Lightning Liqueur originates at [[Iganefta]].
* "Awal Sleeps" is targeted against jelly mines; Ball Lightning Liqueur attacks [[Fefferberry]] crops.
* "Awal Sleeps" removes the sound of its destruction; Ball Lightning Liqueur simulates nature.
* [[Melderson]] created "Awal Sleeps" as an affront to Awal's rebuking of his work.
* "Awal Sleeps" is based on the sound suckage principles of [[Awal shrinkage]].
* Ball Lightning Liqueur requires two to deploy: one to throw the bottle, another to shatter it.
* [[Evesque Valley]] scholars are investigating unshattered Ball Lightning Liqueur bottles.
* Both weapons began active use 50 years ago in a continuing war to decide lighting supremacy.
* The war has lasted so long that it is known as the [[Conflict That Is Not Happening]].
* The [[Evesque Valley]] has frequent (natural) lightning storms, and is north of [[Iganefta]].

===[[Baron Claude Lloyd Albert Smallwood]] (People)===
* The Baron (born -62/7/11 {{EC}}) is [[Bavarian Creame]]'s former husband.
* The Baron is the most important producer of [[Adlorst Vinifera]], but also produces other wines.
* His sprawling plantation, also a tourist attraction, is located in [[Evesque Valley]].
* The Baron is known for dabbling in alchemy and is a suspected member of the [[Karcist League]].
* His alchemy mishaps purportedly (he denies it) created the [[doggerel plague]] of -11 {{EC}}.
* The Baron has written an unknown number of monographs concerning plants, alchemy, and more.
* He has recently studied animal husbandry and attempted to engineer a new breed of [[Mute Chukarandos]].
* The Baron hosts a large library on linguistics, and has been known to talk to animals and plants.
* He has funded several expeditions into distant lands to study the languages of small, dying peoples.
* The Baron has been seen performing annual rites on dates related to his previous marriage.

===[[Battle of Barnum Stones]] (Other)===
* Battles over the supremacy of different means and types of lighting techomancy have been waged.
* The Battle of Barnum Stones, somewhere between -400 {{EC}} and -332 {{EC}}, is the most celebrated.
* The Barnum Stones were moved to Stindersgrough by Corvin Axehand in –158 {{EC}}.
* In addition, a subsequent [[Raking]] has left the exact battlefield location unknown.
* The participants at the Battle of Barnum Stones were the Looliers and the Exingians.
* Salerny Redthighs was the shaman-chief of the Looliers at the time of the Battle.
* After days of consultation, Umbrage, than exasperation, bull's pizzle started the war.
* The Exingians were outnumbered and outflanked, but battled regardless of the odds.
* The Exingians have a ritual square formation of 7 warriors wide, and 7 warriors deep.
* Each center warrior of each line hold [[vorpcara]]s high, and three pages flank them.
* Pages to the left hold wooden bowls of spring water; pages to the right hold springs of adlorst.
* These symbolic items of the 7 by 7 square were meant to represent time passing.
* The Exingians were slaughtered, and the Looliers suffered no losses, nor honoured the dead.
* The group headed for home, camped at the Vale of Serdoch and were never seen again.
* The victory united the remaining Loolier tribes, and eventually led to their own downfall.
* Across the centuries, the Looliers are still despised, despite their success at the Battle.
* [[Bordingbras his hatt!]], the only known Loolian manuscript, is held at the [[Odlucian Library]].
* A scattered line of dried [[Fefferberry]] seeds is considered ritualistic in some areas.

===[[Berell]] (People)===
* Berell is revered as a patron among rural communities, although his name may be an alias.
* A popular folktalke of Berell and his history is stored at the [[Odlucian Library]].
* The philosophy of Berell is to better your own existence, as only you have control of it.
* Those who follow his precepts believe the paramount goals are secrecy and personal wealth.
* The believers have split into different sects, which have varying views and tenants.
* The number of current followers is unknown; secrecy forfeits their admission of belief.
* Formal gatherings of organized service are usually led by the oldest member, a [[rejah]].
* The gatherings rarely take more than an hour, and only happen once every two weeks or less.

===[[Besq Boats]] (Invention)===
* Besq Boats are medium sized sailing craft made from [[Sphoxolis Trees]].
* These trees can be found in many places, but plantations abound in the [[Evesque Valley]].
* The Boats typically have one mast and single sail that uses the top and main boom as support.
* Besq Boats are traditional amongst sailors, and they've appeared in drawings dating to -172 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* Oral history suggests the design of the Boats have remained unchanged for 300 years.
* Building these Boats typically requires a team of eight people, normally master carpenters.
* The Boats take eight months to build, and an apprentice eleven years of study.
* Most construction begins in Ablinth, and naming ceremonies occur in Jole.
* Besq Boats are most prominently used for fishing and coastal commerce.
* Smugglers enjoy the boat's speed, and have developed methods for maritime warfare.
* The most famous Besq Boat sailor was [[Captain Riquiras]], a buccaneer and smuggler.

===[[Bethany Mboya]] (People)===
* Bethany Mboya entered the public eye in -11 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], apparently 19 years old.
* The Bureau of Numbing Research list Bethany as the 4th most popular name for girl babies.
* Her name is assumed a pseuodym as "Mboya" is commonly used in their creation.
* Using a pseudonym is common in Ghyll, but more so in artistic circles, which Bethany influenced.
* Siam Sinch denied rumors that Bethany was a romantic partner, and a muse behind her work.
* Siam Sinch and Gabson Foye, her soon-to-be husband, argued violently over these rumors.
* Taking a lover during your final tri-menth of the [[betrothal march]] is met with scorn.
* Bethany was featured in a series of [[lumograms]] in varying states of dress and undress.
* Bethany was reported to be lovers with artists, scholars, [[Bindlet Ball]] players, and politicians.
* In -9 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], small pamphlets written by Mboya on a variety of subjects appeared.
* In became common in -5 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]] to boast of nights spent, and pleasure had, in Bethany's presence.
* In -3 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], it became clear that Bethany couldn't have had the 6,437 lovers attributed to her.
* Gabson Foye discovered, in -2 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], that Bethany was really the overweight Jan ver Daath.
* Daath, a man, was a retired soldier of the [[Tarkherk Corps]], in the [[Conflict That Is Not Happening]].

===[[Betrothal march]] (Other)===
* A longstanding tradition, the length of the march is determined by math and guesswork.
* In modern times, the march tests the couple's devotion with three grueling sections called tri-menths.
* The tri-menths are not of the same length, involve a prime number distance, and increase in difficulty.
* Tri-menth lengths are determined by year, astrology, hair color, and the #27 [[Bindlet Ball]] player's name.
* The third tri-menth is the most challenging, amd mostly likely to break a couple apart.
* Distances range from several steps to a great many [[sugro-nanit]] lengths.
* The original conceiver of the march may have been [[Briorus Jan-Vanderschusen]].

===[[Bindlet Ball]] (Other)===
* Extremely popular sport, national pastime, and big business.
* The annual championship is held on the the [[Day of Champions]].
* The Ghyll Bindlet League, founded in -54 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], consists of 27 teams.
* Game allegiances have been known to affect political races, as in the election of -38 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* Games can last 5 or 6 days, and a [[Bureau of Forgotten Knowledge]] member resolves referee disputes.
* The longest game on record started in -7 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]] and is still in the 4th period (of 7).
* Players leaving the field forfeit the game, so small homes were built on the field, yet don't hinder play.
* Game play consists of two teams, with the number of players per team determined by a complex formula.
* Due to continual Mediation over the formula results, common convention is to agree on 12 players per team.
* The goal is to get a ball, one [[nanit]] in diameter, into a hole (the bindlet) ''less than'' one [[nanit]] in diameter.
* The interaction between the players and crowd affects the size of the ball due to [[Awal shrinkage]].
* Game play lasts for 7 periods, one of which is over when the ball is put through the bindlet.
* Everything is open to interpretation, and '''Bindlet Ball, Its Rules And History''', is 946 pages.
* Primitive forms have been around since -400 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]]; its current form, roughly 60 years.
* In -14 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], an act was passed to deny any professional bindlet player from taking political office.
* The current champions are the Glossfordshire Maurlons, who won in record time of 5 hours, 17 minutes.

===[[Bobby Shwarmph]] (People)===
* Bobby "Robert" Shwarmph edits [[Aliens Everywhere]], but hasn't been seen since -4/7/22 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* Since his disappearance, his matters and affairs have been handled by "Easy" Lizzard.
* [[Folktown Records]] #519 reported he may have been the victim of nature or foul play.
* Interviews indicate he was driven into alcohol addiction after a trip to the [[Alezan]] ruins.
* Shwarmph is a member of the [[Brothers of the Lantern]] and wrote a white paper in -14 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* In this paper, published in the organization's journal, he rejected [[AuroAnthropology]] as heresy.
* Shwarmph is said to be a platoon leader in the [[Tarkherk Corps]] of the [[Conflict That Is Not Happening]].
* Edward, Bobby's adoptive brother, is rumored to be his son by either Izadora Gutschtup or an [[Alezanians|Alezanian]].
* Though missing, he is scheduled to produce "Aliens, Anywhere" with the Academy of Conspiracy Theologiests.
* Planned for 0 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], drafts are highly sought, and forgeries have sold for 4,900 Quezloos.

===[[Brothers of the Lantern]] (People)===
* The Brothers of the Lantern is a famous school originating before -200 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* The school is located in the Eastern Province of the Dulalian Empire.
* The school specials in theology, [[whingelism]], archaeology, and tonsorial art.
* Brothers are appointed for life after a series of tests, of which great secrecy is maintained.
* Brothers are known to adopt, or be assigned, pseudonyms on appointment.
* Former students attest to the study of archetypal pairs such as light/dark, male/female.
* Brothers rarely publish their findings, but maintain a scholarly journal of no apparent relevance.
* The Brothers are believed to maintain the [[heh-blammo]] balance throughout Ghyll.

===[[Bureau of Forgotten Knowledge]] (Organization)===
* The Bureau was founded by its first President, [[Supetupheraraphes]], in -98 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].
* The first 20 years was hampered by a Paradox, resolved through the formation of BORK.
* BORK is the Bureau of Regained Knowledge, decreed official by [[Meldersen]], the second President.
* The first great discovery, the origins of the Quezlarian Ooo, was also under [[Meldersen]]'s presidency.
* The Quezloo is Ghyll's currency, and is named after Quezlar 6's remarks upon discovering Oolite.
* The Bureau was petitioned to investigate the lost knowledge of Ghyll husbands, but declined to comment.
* Its Ternary Script motto, finally deciphered in -17 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], was quickly changed due to embarassment.
* The next President was Rancticirchiretic, then Awal, and currently (since -11 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]]) Blivingdel.
* The Bureau's main building is known as the Cake, and consists of seven circular, concentric halls.
* The more interior the hall, the more private the knowledge within; the outer rings are open to the public.
* The circular courtyard in the middle (the "Cakehole") is used for games of Doofball between staff.
* Prominent members are often ex-members of the [[Council for Quezlarian Research]].
* Monty Thabot is the Vice Chairman of The Bureau's Steering Committee (the supreme council).
* The Steering Committee has, since -53 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], used three oxen in its motif, based on their ox handling pasts.
* One of the greatest accomplishments of the research carried out by The Bureau was the origins of Andelphracia.
* Another example is the deciphering of one of the best poetic works of [[Alarius]], son to [[Arariax]].
* Alarius' poem will be appearing soon in the eighth revision of the Encyclopedia of Lost Lore.
* Alarius' poem contains one of the earliest known uses of the phrase "Andelphracian Light".
* More recent Bureau studies include the use of dove calling patterns, or "doveination".
* The latest research has been a focus on the religious practices of the [[Nitenmangrey]] culture.
* Farming communities have benefited from this research, based on the downing of bull pizzle.

===[[Burnflies]] (Wildlife)===
* Burnflies are classified as "Composite", as they are both "Insectile" and "Nocturnal".
* The tiny, bioluminescent, winged creatures, are social (but not hive), trainable, and long lived.
* They mate one to one, hunt in packs, and are found in moderate temperatures where smaller prey is ample.
* Most regions encourage them: they control pests, add luminary brilliance, and can be used in modern art.
* They are our closest relatives despite the differences in size, bioluminecense, and lack of prehensile thumbs.
* They share our flexible abdominal carapaces, high-set composite eyes, and third external mandibles.
* [[Cataclysmatologists]] suggest our ancestor lived 10,000,000 years ago, after the fall of the Avazians.
* Some regions refer to them as "Homonoculus Bugs" due to their physical likenss and clever natures.
* Burnflies provide beauty and inspiration; their sight "[rewards] not for doing, but just for seeing".

===[[Bursine Calendar]] (Other)===
* The Calendar is named after Bursine the 14th, an unremarkable [[Hive-Lord]] of the [[Nitenmangrey]].
* The Calendar was made as a gift to his [[Paramount Queen]], Litvia, on their joining day.
* The Calendar was adopted, along with a resetting of the year, for the [[Encyclopedant Calendar]].
* The seven days are Tuesday, Ulfsday, Varhookan, Ween, Xarochsday, YinYin, and Zalestra.
* The twelve months are Ablinth, Baros, Conti, Darwina, E, Fusil, Gomin, Homin, Ikk, Jole, Kendrit, and Lom.
* It is unknown why the days of the week and months of the year follow alphabetic progression.
* A date of 0/1/12 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]] can be read as also "YinYin, the 12th of Ablinth of the year 0."

===[[Bute University]] (Organization)===
* Bute University is known for academic excellence, and will soon celebrate its 400th anniversary.
* The University was created to legitimately research history, in defiance of the King's Story.
* The true findings angered [[King Harandraff the Great]], who raised an army and marched on Bute.
* The initial siege lasted six months, and the Kingdom found itself in a Civil War for seven years.
* When the war was finally over, no family members or descendants of the King remained.
* The Bute campus comprises three lakes, a forest, and "a blasted moorland".
* Major building projects, like the recently completed science buildings, happen every 200 years.
* The upper echelons of administration include Masters, Mistresses, Deans, and a Chancellor.
* [[Bysted Timperton]] was Chancellor for five years, and his leadership was described as "opportunistic".
* His purchases and governance challenged the status quo, and he reorganized the house system.
* The house system currently encompasses 5 teams competing yearly over 23 events.
* In his second year as Chancellor, he built the now famous [[Timperton Clocktower]].

===[[Bysted Timperton]] (People)===
* Bysted is the current vice-chairman of the secretive [[Council for Quezlarian Research]].
* Due to his high rank, almost all of his biographical information has been struck from the record.
* With an estimated birth of -70 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], he graduated at the top of his class at [[Bute University]].
* As an early adult, he married Menia Pyre, and soon after had a son named [[Tim Timperton]].
* Near [[Tim Timperton|Tim's]] birth, Bysted was offered a job at the [[Council for Quezlarian Research]].
* Bysted accepted Chancellorship at [[Bute University]] to be nearer his son.
* Bysted talked the [[Council for Quezlarian Research|Council]] into letting [[Tim Timperton|Tim's]] have a major role, but it didn't last very long.
* The [[Timperton Clocktower]] is rumored to be the meeting place for [[Council for Quezlarian Research|Council]] members.
* Alternatively, the [[Timperton Clocktower]] may be a testing facility for forbidden and forgotten lore.

===[[Battle of Barnum Stones]] (Other)===
* Battles over the supremacy of different means and types of lighting techomancy have been waged.

===[[Berell]] (People)===
* Berell is revered as a patron among rural communities, although his name may be an alias.

===[[Besq Boats]] (Invention)===

===[[Bethany Mboya]] (People)===
* Bethany Mboya entered the public eye in -11 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]], apparently 19 years old.

===[[Betrothal march]] (Other)===
* A longstanding tradition, the length of the march is determined by math and guesswork.

===[[Bindlet Ball]] (Other)===
* Extremely popular sport, national pastime, and big business.

===[[Bobby Shwarmph]] (People)===
* Bobby "Robert" Shwarmph edits [[Aliens Everywhere]], but hasn't been seen since -4/7/22 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].

===[[Brothers of the Lantern]] (People)===
* The Brothers of the Lantern is a famous school originating before -200 [[Encyclopedant Calendar|EC]].

===[[Bureau of Forgotten Knowledge]] (Organization)===

===[[Burnflies]] (Wildlife)===

===[[Bursine Calendar]] (Other)===
* The Calendar is named after Bursine the 14th, an unremarkable [[Hive-Lord]] of the [[Nitenmangrey]].

===[[Bute University]] (Organization)===

===[[Bysted Timperton]] (People)===
* Bysted is the current vice-chairman of the secretive [[Council for Quezlarian Research]].

Said to have taken a period of time equivilant to 200 years in the {{EC}} timeline, it was rumored to be one of the most impressive structures created by the current inhabitants of Ghyll.

Bobby "Robert" Schwarmph putatively edits "[[Aliens Everywhere]]" magazine, but hasn't been seen or heard from by credible sources since -4/7/22 {{EC}}, after he apparently went into seclusion for reasons known only to him at the time of writing. Research reveals all of Schwarmph's known personal and business matters have been handled by associate and confidante "Easy" Lizzard after that date. Folktown Records #519 reported he may--or may not--have been the victim of a freak ball lightning accident, suffering searing burns across his throat which left him scarred and speechless. The article also hints he may have been the victim of foul play. However, our interviews with former associates indicate Schwarmph was mostly driven into plain old alcohol addiction after a vaguely documented incident during his factfinding trip to the [[Alezan]] ruins near his home.

Schwarmph has been accused of using his popular tabloid to promote subliminal conspiracy memes against his political adversaries, but not even his most strident critics seem to remember what evidence they had against him on this point. Few of them remain in office or retain any semblance of their former importance, so their names probably aren't worth mentioning here. He is a member of the [[Brothers of the Lantern]], and published a paper in that organization's scholarly journal as a student in -14 {{EC}}. In that text, he rejected [[AuroAnthropology]] as a doctrinal heresy and held that light is the product of electromagnetic radiation that has little or no bearing on human behavior. He also rejected the concept that social behavior could be studied by scientific investigations. It is not known if this conservative paradigm is actually upheld by other members of the Brotherhood- or even Shwarmph himself, given this and some of his magazine's own conspiracy theoried may be subversive efforts at social engineering.

Or, as his own magazine frequently posits, "is that what they ''want'' you to think?"

Schwarmph is said to be a veteran of the [[Conflict That Is Not Happening]], serving as a platoon leader in the [[Tarkherk Corps]].

Shwarmph's adoptive brother, Edward, is rumored to be his son by either actress Izadora Gutschtup, or an [[Alezanians|Alezanian]]- depending on the rumormonger. Records involving the younger Shwarmph's parentage/origin remain sealed by the courts, but he remains a powerful figure in certain academic circles.

Bobby "Robert" Schwarmph putatively edits "[Aliens Everywhere]" magazine, but hasn't been seen or heard from by credible sources since -4/7/22 {{EC}}, after he apparently went into seclusion for reasons known only to him at the time of writing.

Occasional efforts to discover the source of these ruins has been made, but although time has not affected the structures themselves, any historical information about why or where they came from has been lost into the mists. Most notably, the [[Cranee Historical Society]] has spent many hours poring over the physical structures, searching for some indicator of who, or what, created them. However, the only results that they did find turned out to be a trick played by local children. Here follows the record of a Historical Society member regarding the event:

<blockquote>A discovery today! While dusting around the base of the northern pillar, Phennella discovered a [[vorpcara]] wedged in the ground. This is the first historically significant discovery we've made thus far. The [[vorpcara]] has been sent for testing as to the date of its creation. Its presence here seems to indicate that these devices, of which only seven are known in the world, may be much older than we had previously imagined.</blockquote>

Later in the same historian's record, we discover the falsehood perpetrated by the trickster youths:

<blockquote>We received the information on the date of the [[vorpcara]] today. It turned out that it was exactly the same age as one which had been stolen from a nearby museum. We returned the [[vorpcara]] to a grateful caretaker who had been on the verge of getting sacked over its loss.</blockquote>

To this day, no further knowledge of the origin of the ruins exists.
Most notably, the [[Cranee Historical Society]] has spent many hours poring over the physical structures, searching for some indicator of who, or what, created the structures.

The vorpcara has been sent for testing as to the date of it's arrival. Its presence here seems to indicate that these devices, of which only 7 are known in the world, may be much older than we had previously imagined.</blockquote>

Later in the same historian's record, we discover the falsehood perpetrated by the trickster youths:

<blockquote>We recieved the information on the date of the vorpcara today. It turned out that it was exactly the same age as one which had been stolen from a nearby musem. We returned the vorpcara to a grateful caretaker who had been on the verge of getting sacked over its loss.</blockquote>

To this day, no further knowledge of the origin of the ruins exists.

The lands of Alezan were long ago inhabited by a race that has since deserted the lands completely, leaving behind only structures which time seems to have forgotten. The most apparent structures of the lands of Alezan are viewable from the west portion of the Evesque Valley. Even though much time has passed between the ancient construction of the temples and pillars of Alezan, two single spikes rise out of the forest to dominate over the land to the west of the Valley.

The inhabitants of the land around Alezan do not tread there often, although this does not stop the lands from being a common playplace for children attempting to demonstrate their bravery. No treachery has ever befallen anyone treading through these lands, but there remains an air of eerieness that parents who wish to keep their children safe from harm can sense and protect against.
