Lesson Two: Not All NetSlaves Are Created Equal

Level 1.0 Mole People*
"Living Large in the Net's Hoovervilles"

(*) Disclaimer: While not part of the "working" Web, Mole People deserve inclusion in the New Media Caste System because their behaviors have often impacted NetSlaves at higher levels of Being and colored the general populace's perception of the industry (e.g. "Heaven's Gate," Kevin Mitnick).

Who They Are: Mole People are the hackers, sex freaks, revolutionaries and other assorted weirdos who have taken to the electrosphere to preach their cause, be it religious, political, sexual or technological (e.g. "Amiga People ONLY!").

Where They Can Be Found: Mole people gather on obscure chat channels, restricted-access newsgroups, abandoned BBS' -- basically, anywhere far away from the maddening crowd.

What They Want: More than anything else Mole People want to be left to themselves to discuss the Damned (i.e. everyone else on the Net) and exchange the scraps of information they have gathered in their tiny shopping carts.

Average Age: Varies. Mole People, given the ideological breadth of their numbers, can run the gamut from middle-aged militia groups to adolescent hackers who when they're not communing with their peers are breaching the firewall of their local Savings and Loan.

Percentage of the NetSlave Population: 30% (with a bullet) Given the millennial anxiety that has gripped our culture Mole People represent the most rapidly growing group of NetSlaves.

Enemies: Everyone and anyone. Mole People are driven by an acute paranoia that makes them suspect even members of their own group -- especially "newbies" who while purporting to have "just seen the light" might in fact be shills for the CIA, the Aliens, etc.

Chance of Upward/Downward Mobility: Irrelevant. They don't care about "getting anywhere" because they have already arrived. What concerns Mole People, however, is being ready for the Big One.
